How web design trends have evolved over time?

The concept of web design came into existence in the early 1990s, since then it has come a long way in terms of design, functionality, and technology. As web technology started progressing, the whole web design landscape has undergone an array of changes. Over the decades, people have observed different eras of web design.

It was Sir Tim Berner Lee who invented the world wide web, after which some of the first websites came into existence. Early websites were extremely basic and were entirely text-based with little to no images and lots of links in it, however, a lot has changed in the two decades as now all the websites are filled with intuitive design and top-notch functionality. During the early stage of web design, the designers used to have limited resources in terms of fonts, CSS, and layouts so most websites used to look similar and no creativity can be seen in those websites.

The evolving technology has totally changed the scenario of web design. Earlier website landscape used to be quite different as only basic versions of HTML & content structure were used to create websites later on higher versions of HTML & Images were introduced in it.

To fully understand how far we have come in the journey of web design, we need to briefly understand the different eras in the history of web design. The first website that came into existence explains how web design was primarily based on simple text & a bunch of links. With the technologically changing radically now the websites are more visually appealing on full of functional attributes.

Web design in early 1990-2000

In the year 1990, Tim Berner lee published the first website which was full of simple text and hyperlinks. With dial-up modems, people were used to establish their internet connection. The design layout was also out of the scenario and all the content used to be in text form in a vertical order. With time, more complex HTML & visual consideration were also introduced. As the internet connection was quite slow which is why developers used to optimize those web pages in a way that they can work accurately in slow connection also.

By the mid-1990s, The world of web design started escalating as the page-builders & space GIFs were introduced which played a crucial role in evolving the world of web design in terms of structure, appearance, flexibility, and creativity. With the introduction of rows & columns, the simple vertical order of placing web content changed entirely. Although table-based designs are not much popular these days, it surely played a crucial role in the evolution of web design.

In the late 1990s, The first occurrence of flash took place. Although it was developed in the year 1996 it attained its popularity a few years later. Basically, the flash was the amalgamation of basic HTML & interactive virtual graphics. From color-changing navigation to 3-D buttons and neon colors, flash has changed the entire appearance & usability of the websites.

Web design in 2000-2004

With the arrival of the 21st century, the world of web design was in its enlightened period. During this time, the use of CSS has increased in web designing for separating content and design. It was a revolutionary change in web design as it enabled greater creative freedom to both designer & content developer. The usage of whitespace also helped in highlighting the design elements, and even today, white space is highly important in creating an intuitive web layout.

Web design in 2004-2010

Although the concept of web design came into existence in 1990, it was until 2004, the standard website layout came a thing. All the websites were designed with the navigation shifted to the top of the site. All the web pages were quite short and mostly white, blue & black were used in the website layout. Flash websites were more popular back then but now people are encouraged to avoid flash.

Web design in 2010-2015

During this period, websites have evolved to create more immersive web experience. Drop-down menus & magazine-like layouts became popular, and all the websites were created with a full-color spectrum. All websites were needed to be compatible with all devices as more and more people were using mobile devices. Unique designs & parallax scrolling also become popular during this period.

Web design in 2015-2019

In the past recent years, we can see the growing popularity of responsive websites. With so much competition in the digital landscape, more and more creative elements & functionality are introduced to make websites more engaging and user-friendly. Nowadays, all the websites are aesthetically pleasant and full of functionalities.
